Restaurant Lets Non-Customer Use Bathroom, Sends Her Bill For $5

Not a public restroom.

Not a public restroom.

Somewhere between “no non-customers in the bathroom, no exception” and operating a mini-homeless shelter in the middle of your restaurant is a happy medium. We don’t think that compromise is the approach that a Tennessee restaurant took, which was to track down a non-customer using her license plate information and send her a bill for the restroom fee. $5.

What the non-customer had missed was a sign on the restroom mirror that described the $5 fee. “It was a little index card at the very bottom of the mirror,” she told NBC’s Today Show. Using the mirror was not the first thing on the woman’s mind at the time, and she learned about the fee when an employee brought it to her attention as she was leaving.

She did not pay. So the restaurant wrote down her license plate number, contacted the town sheriff, and obtained the name and address that her car was registered to. She later received a handwritten letter explaining the fee and asking her to send it already.

That is a very effective use of law enforcement resources.

So long, Beverly 18; new Carmike 13 won't open till summer

CHAMPAIGN — Moviegoers on the north side of Champaign will have to travel farther the next few months to get their fix of cinema.

The Beverly 18 multiplex at 910 Meijer Drive, C, closed in mid-February, and the theater complex replacing it isn't expected to open until summer, a spokesman for Carmike Cinemas said.

McDonald’s Has Names For Each Of The 4 Different McNugget Shapes

For as long as I can remember, I’ve known that McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets came in only a handful of repeating shapes. But I’d never considered that the folks at the Golden Arches actually had specific names for each of the four types of McNugget.

Furthermore, the names are not science-y code numbers like A-V1X3 (which does sound tasty), but pretty much the same names you’d expect a 4-year-old to give to the McNugget shapes.

Thanks to the folks at Business Insider, who recently scored a trip to McDonald’s HQ outside of Chicago, we now know that those four shapes are indeed called: Boot (the one that looks like a boot; duh), Ball (the circular one; also duh), Bell (for the one that is sort-of teardrop shaped, and could resemble the silhouette of a bell), and Bone (the one with the least-defined shape; looks kind of like the Boot with the toe cut off).

(Apparently in Canada, the Bone is actually called Bow-Tie, probably because that’s slightly less unappetizing than the idea of eating an actual chicken bone.)

Kim Bhasin of Business Insider even posted this handy image you can print out and take to the McDonald’s with you next time you go:

Police arrest man for leaving 2-year-old outside during strip club trip

Los Angeles police arrested a 24-year-old man late Saturday night for allegedly leaving his 2-year-old daughter in his truck while he was drinking at a Van Nuys, California strip club.

KTLA-TV reported on Sunday that authorities charged Santos Barillas with child endangerment after finding him allegedly drunk inside the vehicle while the child sat in the back seat. Police said a witness reported seeing Barillas passed out and resting on his steering wheel.

When officers pulled Barillas out of the truck, Sgt. Jason Zabel told the Los Angeles Daily News, “he appeared to have the symptoms of someone who was intoxicated. Then they discovered the toddler in the back seat. The child was cold and shivering.”

Witnesses at the club told police they saw Barillas in the club without the child, who was subsequently released into her mother’s custody by Child Protective Services.

Barillas was released on Sunday after posting $15,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court in Van Nuys in March.

Walmart pressing felony charges against employee who ate ‘multiple’ Oreo cookies

Walmart is moving forward with felony charges against an employee of an Indiana store who admitted to eating “multiple” Oreo cookies because she said that she couldn’t afford to pay for them with her salary.

A Portage Police Department report obtained by The Smoking Gun on Thursday said that Penny Winters had been arrested after a Walmart investigation determined she was guilty of theft.

According to the report, Walmart Asset Protection Manager Kenneth Moreno told police that the company had reviewed surveillance video after an open bag of Oreo cookies was found in the store.

“Mr Moreno advised that upon back-tracking the video footage from the location in which the wrapper was located, he was able to observe Ms. Winters select the package of cookies, open it, and proceed to consume multiple cookies during her work shift without paying for said items,” the report said.

When confronted, Winters allegedly explained that she had been eating food from the Portage store and her previous job at an Arizona Walmart for years because she could not afford to pay. Winters provided Walmart with a “voluntary statement form spelling out her transgressions.”

Winters’ son explained to WBBM that his mother could not afford to pay for the items because she only made a wage of $11.40 an hour after working for Walmart for eight years.

Winters is charged with one count of felony theft and could be sentenced to jail if found guilty.

UI putting out word: Woods at South Race really off-limits

URBANA — The signs may say "no trespassing," but the half-open gates and well-worn trails through this wooded area indicate some people haven't heard.

The forest just west of Meadowbrook Park along South Race Street has been a favorite for runners, dog-walkers and bicyclists for years, officials say.

The Beef Stand beefs up campustown options

Like most students from the University of Illinois, I originally hail from the Chicagoland area. While I love C-U, I have to admit that it fails in comparison to Chicago’s world famous food. Whenever I’ve craved the Chicago style classics, I’ve had a two-hour drive before being able to devour them. That was, until a restaurant called The Beef Stand opened its doors on Green Street last fall. They’ve quickly become a campus favorite by serving up Chicago-style classic dishes.

Their menu offers almost every Chicago dish you could possibly want, including the Chicago-style hotdog. For those of you who aren’t from the Chicagoland area, I’ll clue you in to just what that means. A Chicago-style dog is served on a steamed poppy seed bun with relish, diced onion, tomato, short peppers, mustard, a pickle, and celery salt. The most important thing to note is that ketchup is absolutely not on that list of toppings. This Chicago classic comes at quite the bargain price of only $2.75.

The hotdog is far from the only classic Windy City dish that The Beef Stand is serving at a deal. Polish Sausage? You bet. You can get both the polish and the hotdogs Chicago Style, naked, with cheese, or with chili cheese, and all for under $5.

Kristen Wiig Joins Arrested Development Revival

As far as casting news goes, this is about as good as it gets: Former Saturday Night Live superstar Kristen Wiig is set to make an appearance in Netflix’s anticipated Arrested Development revival as a younger version of Jessica Walter’s boozy matriarch Lucille Bluth.

As noted by Vulture, which first broke the news, AD leading man Jason Bateman likely orchestrated the casting coup, given his off screen friendship with Wiig (the pair co-starred in the comedies Extract and Paul).

Last month, Netflix announced that Arrested Development‘s 14-episode fourth season would be available sometime in May.

NC lawmaker: Women should ‘duct tape’ nipples to stay out of jail

North Carolina Republican state Rep. Tim Moore says that women can protect themselves from a new law that makes baring female breasts illegal by simply applying duct tape to their nipples.

On Wednesday, the state House Judiciary Committee C approved House Bill 34, which makes it a Class H felony to purposefully expose “private parts” for the “purpose of arousing or gratifying sexual desire.”

The bill expands the state’s definition of “private parts” to include a woman’s “nipple, or any portion of the areola.”

Republican state Rep. Rayne Brown told lawmakers that she was co-sponsoring the bill because activists had held a topless women’s rights rally in Asheville last summer, where as many as a dozen women bared their breasts (NSFW video here).

Although Brown’s district is 100 miles from Asheville, she felt it was important to act before women tried to assert their rights again by going topless at another rally.

“You’ve got local governments passing ordinances to protect themselves from just this thing,” she explained. “These folks don’t need to be doing that, but they do it because they’re not sure about the law.”

Under the proposed law, women could spend up to six months in jail for a first offense. “Incidental” nipple exposure by breastfeeding mothers would be exempt from the law.

Democratic state Rep. Annie Mobley said she worried that women wearing “questionable fashions” could be prosecuted under the new rules.

But Committee Chairwoman Rep. Sarah Steven (R) suggested that women could use pasties or nipple coverings just to be safe.

“They’d be good to go” with nipple coverings, Stevens said.

“You know what they say, duct tape fixes everything,” Republican state Rep. Tim Moore agreed.

Filling the void with reggae jams

Matt Harsh had always wanted to do a reggae night. And then one night last year, he was at Black Rock where DJ Delayney was playing one of his last gigs there. Delayney played a couple dancehall tunes — tracks he used to play back when Delayney and Harsh first did shows together at the Canopy Club for hip hop Wednesdays.

I love these tracks. So I went up to him and said we should really do a reggae night. Right away I thought about Tuesday nights at Mike 'N Molly’s because they were slower nights in downtown Champaign. No dj nights, no big specials anywhere. It was just an off night in town. It seemed like a perfect gap to fill. Plus reggae wasn’t going on anywhere in town and Mike N’ Molly’s is perfect for reggae. Chef Ra used to always hang out there. And I’m really glad it ended up living there.
