Green Party candidate: Police handcuffed me to a chair for eight hours

Green Party presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein said Wednesday police handcuffed her to a chair during her eight-hour imprisonment following her arrest outside the second presidential debate.

“For most of the time it was just [running mate] Cheri Honkala and myself,” Stein told Democracy Now anchor Amy Goodman. “Yet they felt the need to keep us in tight plastic restraints tightly secured to metal chairs.”

Stein and Honkala were arrested Tuesday while sitting in the street to protest their exclusion from this year’s presidential debates between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney. They tried to enter the debate hall at the host site, Hofstra University, but were denied access because they lacked the necessary credentials.

During her arrest, Stein criticized the group that organized the event, the Commission on Presidential Debates, which was put together as a joint effort by Democrats and Republicans to administer the debates after the League of Women Voters stepped out of that role in 1987.

Stein said the two women were handcuffed the entire time they spent inside a facility specifically designed to hold protesters, even though they had only been charged with violations. She said a request for their release was denied because, she was told, authorities did not want them “wandering around.”

Stein also said she and Honkala were not released until about 30 minutes after the Obama-Romney debate, when they were told “their car” was waiting for them.

“It was actually a Secret Service car, apparently, that was waiting for us,” Stein said. “We were not allowed to make a phone call, there was no phone that was working. We didn’t have ours — we had given our phones to our assistants — so it was quite a bit of work to be able to borrow a phone from someone in a gas station.”

She did, however, say that she was allowed to return a call from her lawyer at one point, but was unable to make arrangements for her release because she did not know when that would happen.

“They actually told our staff that they would be arrested if they continued to wait on site,” Stein said.

Watch Stein’s recounting of her experience, aired on Democracy Now Wednesday, starting at the 13:30 mark of the video below.

London police Taser blind man after mistaking cane for samurai sword

LONDON — Police apologised on Wednesday after a blind man was tasered by an officer who mistook his white stick for a samurai sword.

The incident happened in the market town of Chorley in Lancashire on Friday after police received reports of a man walking through the town carrying a sword.

One policeman thought he had tracked down the offender and asked the blind man to stop. When he failed to do so, the officer stunned him with his Taser gun.

On realising the mistake, officers rushed the victim to a hospital where he was discharged after a check-up.

“Lancashire Constabulary deeply regrets what has happened. We have clearly put this man through a traumatic experience and we are extremely sorry for that,” said Chief Superintendent Stuart Williams.

The incident has been referred to Britain’s police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Police confirmed that a different man was later arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in the town.

80-year-old woman arrested for stealing posters of Obama with Hitler mustache

An 80-year-old Connecticut woman who lived through the Second World War was arrested last week for taking down posters that likened President Barack Obama to Adolph Hitler.

Nancy Lack told WVIT-TV that she felt the need to act when she saw fringe presidential candidate Lyndon LaRouche’s supporters putting up posters at the Hebron post office that depicted Obama with a Hitler-style mustache.

“My generation went through the Second World War, and Nazism is about the worst there can be,” she said. “I just got very angry that they would do that to Obama’s image.”

A LaRouchePAC worker followed Lack and called the police after she put the posters in her car. She was later arrested, but stood by her actions.

“I guess I deserved it. I stole the posters,” she admitted.

Lack faces up to three months in jail and a fine if convicted of sixth-degree larceny and breach of peace charges.

Last month, LaRouche supporters outraged residents in Arlington, Virginia when they displayed a similar poster outside a post office on Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

“I was so offended that someone would do this on the Day of Atonement,” neighborhood resident Joyce Turner told The Washington Post at the time.

Binders Full Of Women (Mitt Romney Remix) - The Melker Project by scottmelker

PLEASE HEART THIS ON HYPEM!!!! - http://hypem.com/track/1qkkf/Binders+Full+Of+Women+(Mitt+Romney+Remix)+-+The+Melker+Project Like most of you, the term "Binders Full Of Women" has been running unchecked through my mind since last night's debate. In an effort to silence my Romney related demons, I decided to throw together this track. I removed the original vocals from my Gangnam Style Remix, and chopped up Romney's speech, with some gems from Obama (disclaimer, the Presidential quotes are NOT REAL). What we have left is some Political Trap music. Enjoy and SHARE.

Death by taser, caught on tape

Death by taser, caught on tape

by digby

Even if you believe in Taser International's pet medical diagnosis that only afflicts people in custody ("Excited Delirium")you would think this would be considered to be wrong.

Unfortunately, police commonly taser people in the US who are already in handcuffs and in custody and it doesn't raise a hue and cry. They usually say, as the officer in that video does, that they had to do it for their own safety but it's quite clear it's because they are trying to force "compliance." They lie because it's impossible to explain how someone who is mentally ill, high on drugs or in the midst of having an epileptic fit can be expected to understand the commands to "comply." And frankly, when you listen to the agitated police screaming at the person to stop struggling, it's quite clear that if "excited delirium" exists it is a disease that afflicts the authorities as well.

I've come to believe that tasers are deadly torture devices and I think they should be banned. (I didn't always think so, but I no longer believe the authorities can be trusted with such a device.) But if they are used, there should definitely be zero tolerance for using them on anyone who is handcuffed in custody. It's as outrageously immoral as using a cattle prod. The police can back off and let the person flail if that's what it takes. Hitting them repeatedly with electro-shock on the scene is no different than hitting them repeatedly over the head with a baton.

Some people die, like this fellow, although not all do. But the minute an electrical shock in administered to suspects already custody, they become victims of torture. There is no excuse for it.

Lose Your iPhone 5 Charger And You’ll Be Stuck With Expensive, Pretty Brick

You want but you can’t have

We mentioned months ago when it was first rumored that the iPhone 5 would replace the iPhone’s now-familiar 30-pin connector with a smaller, but still proprietary connector, that this could cause problems for people whose accessories were all of the old 30-pin type. And here we have the story of Consumerist reader Nick, who lost the charger for his iPhone 5 and is now staring at a very pretty device that he has no way of charging.

“If you lose your charger, Apple doesn’t have any, Best Buy doesn’t have any, Verizon doesn’t have any,” writes Nick.

A check of various retailers’ shows that while there are plenty of sleeves and ways to bling out your iPhone 5, no one seems to have the “Lightning” power cord, with vague time frames — “1-2 weeks,” “3-5 weeks,” “October” — being given for when these items might be available. Apple.com still has no release date on the Lightning to 30-pin adapter.

“Apple can’t even give you a rough estimate of when to see those again,” says Nick, who says the best he’s been able to get is the aforementioned “October,” which doesn’t bode well, since we’re a third of the way through the month.

“So be happy that you paid several hundred dollars for the best phone on the market,” says Nick, “Because you can’t use it simply because accessories are backordered and restricted to certain manufactures to make them.”

UPDATE: Thanks for all of your e-mails suggesting various retail stores. Nick had already tried a number of them, but is going to see if he can get lucky this time.

Podcaster Convinces Tom Hanks to Do an Interview by Bribing Him with a Vintage Typewriter

Tom Hanks is not an easy guy to get a hold of, even if you are former Singled Out host and current Nerdist Podcast frontman Chris Hardwick.

Knowing Tom Hanks' unabashed weakness for vintage typewriters, Hardwick attempted to "persuade" the two-time Academy Award winner to do an interview by sending him a 1934 Smith Corona typewriter.

Here's a transcript of the letter he got back:

Dear Chris, Ashley, and all the diabolical genuies at Nerdist Industries.

Just who do you think you are to try to briibe me into an appearance on your

'thing' with this gift of the most fantastic Cornona Silent typewriter made in 1934?

You are out of your minds if you think... that I... wow, this thing has great action...

and this deep crimson color... Wait! I'm not so shallow as to... and it types nearly

I will have my people contact yours and work out some kind of interview process...

Damn you all to hell,

Tom Hanks

The subsequent podcast was predictably awesome.

Alabama police shoot and kill naked college student

Relatives and peers of an Alabama college student say police mishandled the incident that ended in an officer shooting and killing him Saturday.

According to WALA-TV, officials at the University of South Alabama said 18-year-old Gilbert Collar approached the campus police station naked and banged on the door, challenging the unidentified officer who answered to a fight.

“The man repeatedly rushed, and verbally challenged, the officer in a fighting stance,” said university spokesperson Keith Ayers. “The officer, with weapon drawn, ordered the individual to halt. The officer retreated numerous times in an attempt to calm the situation.”

When Collar continued to rush the officer, Ayers said, the officer shot him once in the chest.

Collar fell to the ground, but got up one more time and challenged him again before dying.

Ayers confirmed that the officer’s report made no mention of Collar being armed, and that security cameras around the building recorded the incident, but offered no further details. The officer, he said, has been placed on administrative leave.

The Alabama Media Group reported that the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and the local District Attorney’s office will investigate of the shooting.

Collar’s mother, Bonnie, told CNN that when she was notified of his death, no one told her he was trying to attack someone before being shot.

“The first thing on my mind is, freshman kids do stupid things,” she said. “Campus police should be equipped to handle activity like that without having to use lethal force.”

Some of Collar’s fellow students echoed his mother’s criticism despite officials’ attempts to explain the situation.

“A cop has more than a gun,” one student told WALA. “He could have pulled out a taser, pepper spray, nightstick, anything like that. So why was his gun drawn at this kid, who was probably drunk or something like that? It just feels like it could have been handled in a better way.”

Watch WALA’s report on the reaction to Collar’s shooting, as aired Saturday, below.

Investigation Claims Some Dental Chains Providing Unneeded Work To Milk Medicaid Cash Cow

People covered by Medicaid often complain that they are not getting the treatments that people with private health insurance receive. But a recent report claims that some high-volume dental chains are pushing their dentists to deliberately perform unnecessary procedures on Medicaid patients in order to make more money.

In a new interview with ProPublica, David Heath of the Center for Public Integrity talks about the findings of the Center’s recent investigation into these mega chains.

“We looked at two of the larger chains, and found evidence that these companies were putting pressure on their dentists to produce at certain revenue targets,” explains Heath, whose investigation was the subject of a recent Frontline (scroll down to watch the entire episode), “thus encouraging them to do procedures that may have been unnecessary.”

According to Heath, one chain that focuses on children tries to make up for the low dollar amounts of Medicaid reimbursements by “doing things like taking x-rays that were not needed, or putting stainless steel crowns instead of fillings on their teeth. They could make twice as much money from Medicaid on these crowns versus just putting a filling on a tooth.”

At the other chain, which has around 350 offices in 22 states and focuses on adult patients who have gone years without sitting in the dentist’s chair, Heath found people who received dentures they didn’t need, and had teeth pulled out that could have stayed.

He claims that one 87-year-old went in just to get two teeth pulled, but “Instead they looked at her mouth and they came up with a treatment plan that was going to cost $8,000. They convinced her though hard-sell tactics to borrow that money through a credit card, and something like $2,000 of that was just to clean her teeth.”

Heath says that these huge firms recruit recent dental school grads who see this as a quick way to get out from under hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt.

What drives these huge chains, the investigation found, is the fact that they are owned by private equity firms, which have adopted their management style to a health care business.

Explains Heath:

“You have people who are not dentists coming up with a business plan that’s based on metrics. They try to get new patients in who haven’t been to the dentist in a while, and they’ve already calculated how much revenue the average new patient should generate.

If you happen to go in and you don’t really have anything wrong with your mouth and you’re a new patient you’re not fitting the model. That creates pressure for the dentists to find things that are ‘wrong.’”

Since the Frontline episode aired in the summer, a Senate investigation has begun. Likewise, some states, including Texas, have begun their own studies of possible Medicaid abuses. However, as the wheels of government often turn so slowly as to be imperceptible, Heath admits it could be quite some time before the impact of his investigation is found.

Now you can plug in your headphones and ride out the rest of the workday watching the Frontline episode:
